so senior congressional correspondent dana bash, she's joining me now and, dana, let's talk missouri here. because what we have told the todd akin, claire mccaskill story in the past, but given what he said, not necessarily an easy win for republicans now. >> that's right. it has been such a roller coaster for republicans, brooke. they went into this race months ago thinking that democrat claire mccaskill was so vulnerable that they were sure to win this seat. it was complicated by todd akin as you said, we talked about it a lot in this program. but the gist of what he said, which was so controversial, a woman's body has the ability to shut down pregnancy from rape. it can refuse to step aside, of course, and republicans who hammered him, begged him to get out of the race, are now in an uncomfortable position of having to eat crow. saying, well, he's better than the democrat. roy blunt, the current sitting senator from missouri. >> i think that anybody else would have been a candidate that clearly would have won and todd very well may win. he's on a ticket, at a time when people are

because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mccain, that cindy mccain got very upset and ran crying out of the room. i talked to rob portman about that, he told me that story, and listen to what he said about why it is so important, to be so hard on his republican opponents in debate prep. >> part of your responsibility in these debates is to be tougher than your opponent. so that they -- the candidate you're helping is ready for the worst of it. so, you know, you have to be a little mean sometimes and kind of try to get

we begin our coverage with dana bash. >> reporter: out othe gate, it was clear. mitt romney came to play. >> the president has a view very similar to the view he ran four years ago that a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will, trickle down government would work. >> reporter: president obama sounded a familiar alarm. warning of romney's been there, done that, economics. >> the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that was made in 2001 and 2003. and we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years. >> reporter: but whether it was health care, jobs or make, romney stood out for his aggressive style. >> i don't know how the president could come into office facing 23 million people out of work and rising economic and spend his energy and passion two years fighting for obama care. >> reporter: the president made his points in a slower, more laid-back manner, often looking down. sometimes appearing disengaged. it's not that he didn't try to rip apart romney's economic plan. >> that kind of pop to

dana bash reporting live for us this morning. dan lothian is in denver, following the obama campaign. what has the president done for final preparations? >> well, he will be, this morning, going through the briefing books again, doing some final preparations and as you heard earlier, doing a walk-through later this afternoon of the venue. but the bulk of the work has happened over the last couple of days as a president was in nevada, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what t real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health
